OH ART FOUNDATION PRESENTS

Solo Exhibition of Cheng Yung Kuo

May, 2019

Cheng-Yung Kuo (1978-2017) was a beloved Chicago-based community contributor, organizer, and celebrated artist. Kuo was both a creative and an activist, constantly advocating for the importance of arts and culture. Kuo’s life and work profoundly affected those around him and his loss is deeply felt.

Kuo’s art is reflective of the beauty and fleetingness of the everyday. With attentiveness to the temporal, his work shows a delicate sensitivity to material and life that is seldom found elsewhere. Kuo’s unique visual vocabulary weaves together universally poignant narratives that urge viewers to look around and within themselves to appreciate moments of reflection. Though well known for his photography, Kuo’s practice was also interdisciplinary in nature. His ceramics show the same careful consideration for the subtly sublime. Some of Kuo’s ceramics work will be displayed for the first time during this retrospective.

“Cheng-Yung Kuo was an artist with an enormous passion and positivity for life and art. His work embodied the same attributes… His attitude was always one of community and collaboration and never trying to leave anyone behind,” Sergio Gomez, founder of 33 Contemporary Gallery, remembers.

Cheng-Yung Kuo: A Retrospective was on view from May 17th to June 14th, 2019.
